December, 2018

We’ll start with several thank- yous. First of all, to the North Dakota Community Foundation for a $2000.00 grant. We will be purchasing books and display items with this money.   And, to Linda Bergenheier for contributions in memory of Eldris Wilkens and Ruthie Henderson. Thank you. We also appreciate your shopping at the book kiosk at Bremer’s market. Your donations help us to stay open and with purchasing new books.

Over the Thanksgiving week we had a project going on. We had the hallway, front office and cabinets painted. Come in and see if you notice a difference.

I don’t know if you know it, but we post a copy of the New York Times best sellers at least once a month. This month, we have 9 of the 15 top selling books. I think your library is very current thanks to purchases and donations of books.

A reader wanted to share information with you about a series at the library. The author is Louise Penny who writes the Inspector Gamache books. If you like watching NCIS, I think you will enjoy the Gamache series that takes place in Canada. Inspector Gamache is in charge of homicide and most of the books center around the residents of a small township called Three Pines. There is a story on how it got its name. Three Pines is filled with characters you will enjoy following from book to book. You will get to know the Inspector, his wife, grown children and especially the people he works with. The books are best read in order. We have them all, including the book just released last week! Check one out and I think you will get hooked.

Some of the newest additions are:
Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf – A widow approaches a widower in her neighborhood with a strange request. She misses the closeness of her husband, mostly during the night. So she asked the widower to spend nights with her, just for the closeness. It’s uncomfortable at first but works for both of them. But, what does the grown family, neighborhood and town think about it? The book makes you think.

Dark Sacred Night by Michael Connelly – Connelly’s private detective Harry Bosch investigates cold cases. He’s caught sneaking into a police station to get information on a 15 year old Daisy Clayton, a homeless runaway brutally murdered. Renee Ballard, who caught him rifling through the files, becomes interested in case, and together they work to find justice for Daisy.

A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult – A reviewer sums up this book as a provocative novel about ordinary lives that intersect in a crisis, told through the eyes of a teenaged hostage.  Picoult writes books about “today” and her books always make you think.

Every Breath by Nicholas Sparks – Hope Anderson takes a week at her family’s North Carolina beach cottage to mull over her future. She has had a relationship for 6 years with no wedding plans and her father is diagnosed with ALS. Tru Walls is summoned to Sunset Beach by a man claiming to be his father. He hopes to unravel the mystery of his mother’s early life and recapture memories lost with her death. Will the two strangers cross paths? Of course they will!

Long Road to Mercy by David Baldacci – Baldacci has a new heroine. Meet Atlee Pine – your new FBI agent who specializes in serial killers. Her twin sister was abducted by a serial killer at age six. She never saw her again. Now, she has a case of a lost tourist who obviously had something more than Grand Canyon sightseeing in mind. She’s putting clues together when she’s abruptly called off the case. She disobeys that order. Will it end her career?
